In honor of MCCC softball’s final home game on April 27th, we will recognize the achievement of the Vikings four sophomore players: Cierra Acevedo (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West), Abby Bell (Hightstown, NJ/Hightstown HS), Shea Krebs (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville HS) and Maya Patel (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township).
Acevedo is an infielder who had a .416 batting average, 74 hits, 63 runs, 51 doubles, and a .646 slugging percentage in the 2023 season. Acevedo also had seven triples which was fourth best in NJCAA Division II softball. In 2024, Acevedo is batting .295 with 31 hits, 35 runs, 34 RBIs, and four home runs. In a recent doubleheader vs Sussex CCC, Acevedo got her 100th career hit. Acevedo is a Health Science major.
Catcher Bell hit .379 in the 2023 season with 47 hits, 25 runs, 9 doubles and 4 home runs. Bell had a .565 slugging percentage and .989 fielding percentage. In the 2024 season, Bell is batting .356 with 32 hits, 37 RBIs, 20 runs, and 5 home runs through 31 games played. Bell has a perfect fielding percentage and has only allowed two passed balls. Bell is a Communications major. Bell earned All-GSAC Academic honors for Fall 2023.
First baseman and utility player Patel finished the 2023 season 10th the nation in RBIs with 86 to go along with a .420 batting average, 71 hits, 63 runs and 20 home runs. Patel had an .888 slugging percentage, .473 on base percentage and only made one error in the 2023 season. Patel earned 1st Team All-GSAC (Garden State Athletic Conference) honors in 2023. Through 20 games in the 2024 season, Patel is batting .546 with 34 hits, 26 RBIs, 25 runs, 13 doubles and no strikeouts. Patel has a .932 slugging percentage and .662 on base percentage. Patel recently got her 100th career hit and RBI. Patel is an Exercise Science major.
Krebs went 18-4 for the Vikings in 2023 and had 123 strikeouts in 109.1 innings pitched with a 2.88 ERA. Krebs earned 1st Team All-Region 19 and 1st Team All-GSAC honors last spring. In the 2024 season, Krebs is 11-1 with a 1.97 ERA. Krebs has 73 strikeouts in 78.1 innings pitched. Krebs has three shutouts on the season which is 15th best in the nation and threw a perfect game in an 8-0 win at Lackawanna. Krebs is a Communications major.
Last May, Krebs earned NJCAA Academic All-American honors. In February, Krebs was selected as one of MCCC’s National Girls and Women in Sports honorees for her academic and athletic achievements as well as her leadership and teamwork. Krebs has earned both All-Region 19 and All-GSAC All-Academic honors each of her semesters at MCCC (Fall 2022, Spring 2023 and Fall 2023).
Over two seasons, these four sophomores have led Mercer softball to a 69-15 record.
