MCCC Softball Off To An Impressive Start

MCCC Softball is off to its best start in over fifteen years.  The Vikings are an impressive 18-0.  What is even more impressive is that the Vikings have only eleven players and have been battling through some injuries, including one to top pitcher Jessica Adams.  The flexibility of Head Coach Ryan Zegarski’s players this season is just one reason for the Vikings’ success.  When putting together his lineup for the spring, Zegarski joked that every player could be listed as a utility player since his players have had to rotate positions based on the team’s needs in each game.

Another reason for Mercer’s success this season is their offense.  The team batting average is .392, which is 19th best in NJCAA Division II softball.  The Vikings have a .571 slugging percentage and have scored 191 runs.  Seven players are hitting .300 or better and five of those seven players have an average of .400 or better.  Leading the offense is freshman Stella Logan (Trenton, NJ/Allentown HS) who has an impressive .533 batting average along with eight home runs.  Sophomores Emily Wyzykowski (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) is hitting .491 and Angelina Guida (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.) is batting .483

Offense isn’t the only reason Mercer softball has had a strong start, as the Vikings’ defense has been strong as well.  Mercer has six shutouts in 18 games, 14th best in the nation and has a team ERA of 2.05, 18th best in the nation.  Freshman Jozalyn Sheipe-Warthen (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) is 10-0 with a 1.56 ERA in 58.1 innings pitched.  Sophomore Madison Jobes (Roebling, NJ/Florence Twp. Memorial) has been splitting catching and pitching duties and is 6-0 on the season.

The schedule does get tougher for the Vikings, starting this Saturday with a home doubleheader against Del Tech, but winning 18 games in a row is never easy regardless of the competition.
