Mercer men’s basketball season came to an end last Tuesday with a tough 104-90 loss at County College of Morris in the Region 19 Playoffs. The Vikings made an improbable run into the playoffs, winning their final six games to qualify for the playoffs.
But the toll of playing six straight must wins, including three in four days the week before their playoff game showed. MCCC fell behind early and were down 44-31 at the half. Despite scoring 28 more points in the second half than they did in the first half, the Vikings were never able to play themselves back into contention.
Freshman Brandon McCain (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick HS) led the Vikings with 22 points and freshman Joell Idrovo (Hamilton, NJ/Solebury School) had 16 points. Sophomore Jayson Love (Philadelphia, PA/Academy at Palumbo) had 14 points and five assists and sophomore Joe Lemly (Hamilton,NJ/Nottingham) and freshman Torren Greene (Berlin, NJ/Paul XI) added 12 points. Freshman Drew Parrish (New York, NY/Murray Bergtraum) had seven points, six assists and four steals in the losing effort.
The season did not end the way the Vikings hoped, but it was quite a ride to make it in and there is pride that can be taken in the way the team rallied down the final stretch of the season to make a magical run into the playoffs.
