Mercer men’s basketball heads into the second half of the season with a 5-8 record and will focus on qualifying for the Region 19 Playoffs. The Vikings need to finish the season with a .500 record in Region play or a .500 record overall.
The Vikings have been strong offensively, averaging 88.8 points per game, 25th best in Division II NJCAA men’s basketball. MCCC is shooting 51.3% from the field, sixth best in the nation and are averaging 9.1 three point field goals made per game, 24th best in DII men’s basketball.
Mercer has been led by sophomore Jayson Love (Philadelphia, PA/Academy at Palumbo) who is averaging 19.9 points per game. Freshman Joell Idrovo (Hamilton, NJ/Solebury School) is averaging 16.1 points per game while averaging 16.1 points per game and shooting 57% from the field.
The Vikings have also had strong play from freshmen guards Brandon McCain (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick HS) who is averaging 11.1 points per game and Torren Greene (Berlin, NJ/Paul VI) who is averaging 10.8 points per game.
Mercer is 2-4 in Region 19 play, tied with Lackawanna, Del Tech and Essex for 5th. Raritan Valley in first in the Region with a 5-1 record in Region play. Middlesex and Morris are tied for second with a 4-2 record in Region play. In order to qualify for the Region playoffs, the Vikings must be .500 in the Region or have a .500 record overall.
The Vikings have six Region games in the second half if the season: January 21st vs Middlesex, January 28th vs Del Tech, February 1st at Essex, February 4th at Lackawanna, February 18th at Raritan Valley and February 20th vs Morris.
Mercer also plays six non-Region games in the second half of the season: January 11th vs SUNY Ulster, January 16th vs Northampton, January 25th vs SUNY Orange, January 30th vs Atlantic Cape CC, February 6th vs Bucks CCC, and February 13th vs CCBC Dundalk.
Each game in the second half of the season is key as the Vikings will look to make the Region playoffs for the second straight season.
