2025 Women In Sports Day Selections

 

 National Girls and Women in Sports Day is on February 5th and recognizes the accomplishments of female athletes and honors the progress and equality for women in sports.  In recognition of this day, the MCCC Athletic Department and coaches MCCC selected one player from each of its for women's sports teams as a representative of this national day and what it represents.  The criteria for the selection was a second year athlete who has demonstrated athletic and academic success along with leadership and teamwork.  This year's selections are women's basketball player Carla Cencerrero Gallego, softball player Makenna Spak, women'a tennis player Diana Kalajdzic and women's soccer player Fiona Madigan.

 

Cencerrero Gallego is a Liberal Arts major from Mataro, Spain.  Cencerrero Gallego earned All-Conference and All-Region All-Academic honors for the Fall 2024 semester and had a prefect 4.0 GPA for the fall semester.  Cencerrero Gallego has helped the Vikings to a 14-5 record and a top 25 ranking early in the 2024-2025 season.  The forward has averaged 5.5 rebounds per game and worked her way into the starting lineup.  Cencerrero Gallego is always supportive of her teammates and maintains a positive and encouraging attitude every game and practice.

 

Spak is a Biology major from Hamilton, NJ. Spak has earned All-Region and All-Conference All-Academic honors all three of her semesters at MCCC (Fall 2023, Spring 2024 and Fall 2024.)  Spak earned 2nd Team NJCAA Academic All-American honors for 2023-2024 for having a GPA of 3.80-3.94 for the entire academic year of 2023-2024.  In Spring 2024, Spak earned President’s List honors for having a 4.0 GPA that semester. Spak was a member of the 2024 MCCC softball team that set a program record with 42 wins and advanced to the Atlantic A District Championship.  The outfielder played in 50 of 51 games and had a .368 batting average for the 2024 season along with a .482 on base percentage.  Spak also had 49 hits, 20 RBIs and 28 walks.  Spak always comes ready to work hard, encouraging teammates to do the same and will do whatever is asked of her by her coaches.

 

Kalajdzic is a Business Administration major from East Windsor, NJ.  Kalajdzic was a member of the 2024 Vikings’ women’s tennis team who had their highest ever finish at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament and finished 8-3 in the regular season last spring.  Kalajdzic earned All-Academic honors in Fall 2024 and Spring 2023.  Kalajdzic went 9-4 in her Singles matches last spring and 8-5 in Doubles matches.  Kalajdzic’s focus and determination on the court sets a positive example for her teammates. 

 

Madigan is an Exercise Science major from Dublin, Ireland.  Madigan was named to 1st Team All-Region 19 in her two seasons on the women’s soccer team.  Madigan is also a two-time Conference Player of the Week.  Madigan earned All-Region All-Academic honors Fall 2023, Spring 2024, and Fall 2024 and earned President’s List honors in Fall 2023 for a 4.0 GPA that semester.  In 2024, Madigan started 17 of 17 games.  In her two seasons as a center defender, Madigan had eight goals and four assists.  Madigan helped MCCC women’s soccer win the 2024 Region 19 Championship.  Madigan helped control both play on the field and pushed herself while encouraging others every game and practice.
