Basketball Scoreboards to be Dedicated to Williams Family on November 9th

In honor of his parents and on behalf of his family, former MCCC Men’s Basketball Coach Kelly Williams has made a significant contribution to Mercer Athletics.  This contribution will be reflected with the naming of the David and Willie Mae Williams Scoreboard in the PE Building.

Williams served as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Mercer from the 1999-2000 season until the 2007-2008 season.  Williams left MCCC to become Head Men’s Basketball Coach at his alma mater, The College of New Jersey.

In his nine seasons at Mercer, Williams won 154 games and six GSAC (Garden State Athletic Conference) Championships.  Williams helped Mercer men’s basketball reach the Region 19 finals three times and advance to the District IX playoffs.  In 2000, Williams was named the Junior College/DII/DIII Coach of the Year by the NJ Collegiate Basketball Coaches Association.

Williams played on the TCNJ men’s basketball team from 1989-1993, scoring just shy of 1,000 points in his career.  Prior to playing at TCNJ, Williams was a standout at Ewing High School, scoring over 1,000 points (1,218) and was inducted into Ewing High’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

In June 2020, Williams was named Athletic Director at Kean University.

While at Mercer, Williams emphasized success for his student athletes both on the court and in the classroom.  “Basketball is only one part of life. I run my program – which is academics first, basketball second. We help the players with both.”

Williams wants to give back to MCCC, where he felt his career really took off.  “Learning how to coach at this level and help these students with issues on and off the court prepares you for any job.  Coaching tests you, but if you can get through that, you are prepared to handle anything.”

Williams wants to honor his parents who always supported not just him, but his teammates.  “My parents would be at every game and every practice and helped me get where I am today.  They didn’t just care about me, but my friends and teammates and would be happy to give back to MCCC to help student athletes succeed.”

The scoreboards will be officially dedicated to the Williams family on Saturday, November 9th when MCCC hosts RCSJ Gloucester in a basketball doubleheader.  The ceremony will take place at halftime of the women’s game, which has a 12:00 PM tipoff.  Mercer men’s basketball will immediately follow the women's game.  Light refreshments will be available prior to the women's game and lunch will be provided between games.  All guests attending are asked to RSVP using the following link: https://forms.office.com/r/GXAQuypLMq
