On Saturday, November 9th, MCCC officially dedicated the scoreboards in the basketball gym to the Williams Family. Former MCCC Men’s Basketball Coach Kelly Williams made a donation to Mercer Athletics in honor of his parents, Willie Mae and David Williams. The top of each scoreboard reads “In Loving Memory of David and Willie Mae Williams Who Never Missed a Game.”
Williams served as Head Men’s Basketball at Mercer from the 1999-2000 season until the 2007-2008 season. Williams left MCCC to become Head Men’s Basketball Coach at his alma mater, The College of New Jersey. In his nine seasons at Mercer, Williams won 154 games and six GSAC (Garden State Athletic Conference) Championships.
In making a donation to MCCC Athletics, Williams wanted to honor his parents who always supported not just him, but his teammates. “My parents would be at every game and every practice and helped me get where I am today. They didn’t just care about me, but my friends and teammates and would be happy to give back to MCCC to help student athletes succeed.” Both of Williams’ parents died during the pandemic, four months apart.
At halftime of the women's game, Williams spoke fondly of his parents and how supportive they were and also discussed how he came up with the scoreboard as a way to honor them. “I walked in here a year ago, looked around at all the championship banners and then looked up at the scoreboard. And I said that’s it, this would be a way to honor my parents.”
The dedication of the scoreboards capped off a great day for MCCC basketball on November 9th. Mercer women’s and men’s basketball both beat RCSJ-Gloucester 92-67, the women winning 92-67 and the men won 98-76.
Thank you to Kelly Williams for the generous donation to MCCC Athletics in honor of your parents.
