Steven Schechter, the "Voice of Mccc Athletics"

 

Mercer Athletics is excited to be able to provide play by play for some home athletic events thanks to Steven Schechter, the “Voice of the MCCC Athletics” as Athletic Director Eric Grundman has dubbed him.  Schechter is a 49 year old student at MCCC, who is pursuing an AAS in Television with the goal of becoming a sports broadcaster.

 

Schechter does have some past experience in the broadcast booth as he did radio for Rutgers basketball games.  Schechter decided to go back to school with encouragement from his girlfriend while watching sports, specifically an English Premier League game.  Schechter realized how much he wanted to call games, so he chose go back to MCCC and enroll in the Television program.

 

Schechter has begun calling some Viking home soccer games this fall.  When discussing what is involved in calling games, Schechter said that preparation is the most important thing.  This preparation involves the memorization of rosters, a call or email with coaches and looking up information on both teams.  Schechter brings a sheet with the information he needs to games and uses this as his guide throughout a game.

 

Schechter plans to call as many games as he can including the Region 19 Soccer Playoffs which Mercer will be hosting.  Schechter plans on calling Viking basketball games and possibly baseball and softball games.

 

When asked who his favorite sports broadcaster is, Schechter said Marv Albert.  “I grew up listening to him call Knicks games and my dad always said he’s the best at what he does.”  Schechter also cited Vin Scully, long-time voice of the Dodgers, as one of the best broadcasters he’s ever heard. 

 

For Mercer Athletics and Schechter, it’s an exciting start at play by play that will add much to the livestream experience for viewers and give Mercer Athletics a voice for home games.
