January 15th may be National Nothing Day, but in Athletics, there is always something going on. Mercer’s spring sports teams will begin playing soon. MCCC basketball teams are entering the second half of their season and looking to make a push for the Region 19 Playoffs.
Mercer men’s basketball must finish .500 or better in Region or overall to qualify for the Playoffs. Each game the Vikings play in this second half of the season is critical. The Vikings have six Region games in the second half if the season: January 21st vs Middlesex, January 28th vs Del Tech, February 1st at Essex, February 4th at Lackawanna, February 18th at Raritan Valley and February 20th vs Morris.
Mercer men’s basketball also plays five non-Region games in the second half of the season: January 16th vs Northampton, January 25th vs SUNY Orange, January 30th vs Atlantic Cape CC, February 6th vs Bucks CCC, and February 13th vs CCBC Dundalk.
MCCC women’s basketball is currently tied for fourth place in the Region 19 standings and looking to gain a top seed in the Region Playoffs. Mercer women’s basketball faces eight Region opponents in the second half of their schedule including Union on January 14th, Harcum on January 18th, Middlesex on January 21st, Del Tech on January 28th, Essex on February 1st, Lackawanna on February 4th, Salem on February 11th and Raritan Valley on February 18th.
At this final stretch of home basketball games there will be Academic Achievement Night to recognize all student athletes who earned All-Academic honors for the Fall 2024 semester. There will be NGAWS Night, where a member of each MCCC women’s sports team will be recognized for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Both men’s and women’s basketball will have Sophomore Nights to honor their sophomore players who will be playing in their final home game as a Viking.
There is also the spring sport season to look forward to as baseball, softball, men’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s tennis will begin play in March.
Even when other areas on campus slow down, MCCC Athletics remains busy preparing for the next season and following the success of our student athletes.
