On Sunday, March 24th, Mercer women’s tennis got the unique opportunity to play a match at the Billie Jean National Tennis Center in New York, host site of the US Open. The Vikings played in a scrimmage vs Baruch College and got to experience the many sights and features of the center. The center is on a 46 acre site.
Head Women’s Tennis Coach Marc Vecchiolla called the opportunity “such a thrill to be there, the most famous tennis venue in the US.”
While the grounds were closed, the team got to walk the grounds, saw the Court of Champions and Arthur Ashe and Althea Gibson Statues and Gardens.
Vecchiolla said of the experience “Playing at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is something our players will remember for the rest of their lives. It was only a scrimmage, but one of the highlights of our schedule. Next summer when the US Open is on TV, they surely will reflect back to playing on the same courts as the best players in the world. What an experience!”
