On Tuesday, October 15th, MCCC men’s soccer hosted its first ever HTRSA (Hamilton Township Recreation Soccer Association) Day at the Vikings final regular season home game of the 2024 season. Players in HTRSA were invited to watch Mercer take on Cecil College. HTRSA players in attendance got to scrimmage on the turf field at halftime of the game and meet MCCC players after the game.
The idea for the day came about from discussions between Athletic Director Eric Grundman and Senior Women’s Sports Administrator Erin Cahill-Wetzel. “Eric and I have talked about connecting our athletic programs more with our local community. We had discussed the idea of having a youth day or night with a local league or leagues, where youth players in a league could come out for a Mercer game. This would not only be a fun experience for the young players but fun for MCCC players as they could see that young kids look up to them. If (which hopefully it is) a good experience, the kids and parents remember it and think of the good time they had at MCCC, which gets them to visit the college again and maybe down the road come here.” said Cahill-Wetzel.
Cahill-Wetzel has two sons who play HTRSA soccer and decided to reach out to her sons’ coach, Brian Angelucci to see what he thought: “Thanks to Brian Angelucci and Melissa Harris from HTRSA who helped us pull this off. We didn’t have much time to organize the day, but we did it and despite a 4:00 PM game, right after the elementary school day ends and colder weather, we had a good turnout and more importantly, the players that came had a good time.”
And to top off the night Mercer got a 5-1 win over Cecil. It was a win-win for all those involved!
