"Lucky" Number 13 in MCCC Athletics

With Friday the 13^th falling this week, let’s look at some of Mercer Athletics lucky number 13 from Vikings sports so far this year.

Widmarc Dalce completed his 13^th season as Head Coach of the Vikings Men’s Soccer team and helped lead Mercer to the NJCAA National Tournament.  The men’s soccer team also had a 13 game winning streak, heading into the National Tournament.  And freshman Philip Owczarek (Landshut, Germany/Hans-Carossa Gymnasium) wore a #13 jersey.

Mercer women’s soccer finished the 2024 season with one win more than thirteen with a 14-2-2 record.  Sophomore Fiona Madigan (Dublin, Ireland/Fingal Community College) finished the season with 13 points (goals and assists) and freshman Eva Sturm (Berlin, Germany/Gymnasium Steglitz) had 13 assists in the season.

MCCC women’s basketball is averaging 13 offensive rebounds per game.  Freshman Alexandra Garcia Galen (Barcelona, Spain) was averaging exactly 13.0 points per game after eight games.  Sophomore Jada Queen (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic Academy) is averaging just under 13 rebounds a game with a 12.5 rebounds per game average.  Queen is also twelfth (one place ahead of lucky 13^th) in the country with 107 rebounds through eight games.  Sophomore Gabriella Ross (Lakehurst, NJ/Monsignor Donovan Catholic) has 13 assists on the season and freshman Jayla Jones (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) has 13 steals in eight games. 

MCCC Men’s basketball also has some lucky number 13s so far this season.  Sophomore Nasir Collins (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) has 13 steals in nine games.  Sebastian Perry (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) has 13 made field goals and 13 assists and freshman men’s Brandon McCain (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick HS) has 13 made free throws.  And sophomore Joe Lemly (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) is #13.

Even if 13 isn’t always a lucky number, one thing we know we are lucky for is the student athletes who attend MCCC.
