June is Effective Communications Month which allows us to look at the Communication major at MCCC and highlight some of our student athletes in this program. Softball players Shea Krebs (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville HS) and Abby Bell are Communication majors. Krebs was named the 2024 Region 19 Pitcher of the Year and earned 1st Team All-Region 19 honors for the second straight season. Krebs threw a perfect game against Lackawanna in April and finished her career at MCCC with strikeouts. Krebs also went 17-2 this season, placing her in the top in the nation in NJCAA Division II softball in wins.
Krebs also excelled academically and was named an NJCAA Academic All-American in 2023. Krebs also earned All-Region and All-Conference All-Academic honors all of her semesters at MCCC (Fall 2022, Spring 2023, Fall 2023 and Spring 2024). Krebs was also chosen as one of three MCCC female athletes recognized for academic and athletic achievement as well as leadership and teamwork for National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
Bell was Krebs’ “battery mate” as catcher for the Vikings and had a .376 batting average this spring. Bell finished her Mercer career 100 hits, 88 RBIs, 59 runs, 16 doubles and 12 home runs. Bell earned All-Conference Academic honors for the Fall 2023 semester.
Freshman baseball pitcher James Hyman (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West) is also a Communication major. The left handed pitcher saw limited action in his first collegiate season.
The Communication program at MCCC focuses on oral communication, mass media, and media ethics, media production, and the creation process for audio and visual messages. Students can choose to concentrate on writing and communication processes or in technical production.
Goals from the Communication program at MCCC include: learning how to analyze, evaluate, and critique the design and delivery of all forms of communication; create and deliver oral, electronic, and written communication to diverse audiences; demonstrate effective techniques to manage communication anxiety and enhance message delivery; identify characteristics of different forms of communication; and analyze, evaluate, and discuss the issues and ethical situations created by mediated messages.
