Morgan Comfort is (months in now!) MCCCs’ new Athletic Trainer. Comfort comes to Mercer after serving as Assistant Athletic Trainer at North Carolina Wesleyan University.
Comfort earned her Bachelor of Science in Health and Exercise Physiology from Ursinus College and her Master’s in Athletic Training from Lebanon Valley College. Comfort completed clinical rotations with Lebanon Valley football and men’s basketball, Rutgers University football, Elizabethtown College lacrosse, and other local high school sports. While at North Carolina Wesleyan, Comfort primarily worked with football, women's basketball, women's lacrosse, coed cheerleading and dance teams.
One of the things that attracted Comfort to MCCC was the small size. “I was looking for a smaller-sized school because I enjoy getting to know who I work with on more than just a surface level. I grew up playing team sports and I thrive in environments where teamwork and collaboration is emphasized. Coming from two small schools myself, I find lots of comfort in these close-knit environments.”
One of Comfort’s goals at MCCC is to focus on the overall health of Mercer’s student athletes. “I hope to shed a positive light on our athletics here and help our student-athletes put their best foot forward. Coaches usually tell their athletes that they are students before athletes to emphasize the importance of maintaining good grades. I use a similar mindset except I say they are a person above all else. Regardless of playing time, sport, position, etc. I strive to give the best care possible. As a former college athlete myself I've recognized how important it is to keep yourself healthy physically and mentally.”
Comfort grew up playing sports and found herself attracted to a career in Athletic training in high school. “I knew that I wanted a career revolving around sports as I played many growing up. I found myself in the Athletic Training realm after a career class in high school. For one assignment, we had to research different occupations in a field that interested us, and I came across Athletic Training. It was there that I realized this was what I wanted to do with my life. During my time at Ursinus College, I formed a great relationship with my Athletic Trainer Jeff, and he pushed me to learn more about sports medicine. My love for Athletic Training and sports medicine was solidified during my first rotation in graduate school where I worked with Lebanon Valley's football program. I loved the excitement of the games and helping the student-athletes achieve their goals in sports by keeping them healthy.”
Comfort grew up locally, attending Steinert High School and playing field hockey, basketball and softball.
The thing Comfort enjoys the most about being an Athletic Trainer “is simply just helping others. Whether I rehab them back from surgery, manage an ankle sprain, or just be someone they can talk to, I love getting to know my patients and lending a helping hand. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing my student-athletes thrive, especially when I know I got to play a part in their success on and off the field.”
One thing MCCC student athletes can take comfort in is knowing they have an Athletic Trainer who cares about their well-being and success on and off the field.
