West Windsor, N.J. – Mercer County Community College (MCCC) invites friends and supporters of the college’s student athletes to hit the links on Monday, Sept. 9 for the 28th Annual MCCC Golf Classic for Scholarships, co-hosted by the MCCC Foundation and Athletics Department in partnership with Haldeman Auto Group.
According to Joe Claffey, Executive Director of the MCCC Foundation, the 28th annual tournament has already received generous support from numerous area corporations. Haldeman is the tournament's Hole-In-One sponsor, with a new Lexus as the featured car.
The tournament will be held at Trenton Country Club in West Trenton, NJ. The practice range for participants opens at 10:30 a.m. Registration and lunch begin at 11:30 a.m., with tee-off at 12:30 p.m. The event features a shotgun start, scramble format. Skill prizes include low gross foursome, second low gross foursome, longest drive contest on fairway for men and women, hole in one, putting contest, and closest to the pin on two holes. The day concludes at 5:30 p.m. with the 19th Hole Reception and Silent Auction, followed by dinner and awards. (The silent auction will feature guest foursomes at premier golf clubs, among other sports-related items.)
“Every dollar we raise supports scholarships for Mercer’s student athletes,” Claffey said, noting that the tournament fosters great community engagement. “The MCCC athletics program has a well-deserved reputation for excellence. In just the past year, Mercer’s lacrosse and tennis programs competed at the national level. Many of our athletes will continue their educations and academic careers at four-year institutions. These students represent the college with distinction and deserve our investment into their futures.”

The tournament is held in memory of Dr. Cynthia Shaffer, who served as a member of the MCCC Foundation Board and was an avid supporter of youth sports.

According to MCCC Athletics Director John Simone, the Class of 2019 included 24 athletes who will be transferring to continue their academic and athletic careers. “Our students learn important life skills including teamwork and time management. They consistently perform well in the classroom. This tournament lets them know that we believe in them and are investing in their futures,” Simone said.
