Note: Students who have taken two or more years of a foreign language, and have done so in the last two years, should begin that language at the 200 level or switch to a new language. If there is doubt, placement will be determined by testing or consultation with the academic division.
JPN 101 - Beginning Japanese I (3 credits)
Introduction to spoken and written Japanese communication. Essential vocabulary and grammar, pronunciation, listening comprehension, reading and writing. Consideration of Japanese culture as it affects the socially acceptable use of the language. 3 lecture hours

JPN 102 - Beginning Japanese II (3 credits)
Prerequisite: JPN 101 with a minimum C grade
Continuation of JPN 101. Further introduction to spoken and written Japanese communication. Essential vocabulary and grammar, pronunciation, listening comprehension, reading and writing. Consideration of Japanese culture as it affects the socially acceptable use of the language. 3 lecture hours

Prerequisite: JPN 102 with a minimum C grade
Reinforcement and expansion of the fundamentals of spoken and written Japanese communication. Development of speaking ability and listening comprehension, increased vocabulary, practice in reading and writing. Consideration of Japanese culture and effective communication strategies. 3 lecture hours
