Note: Students who have taken two or more years of a foreign language, and have done so in the last two years, should begin that language at the 200 level or switch to a new language. If there is doubt, placement will be determined by testing or consultation with the academic division.
FRE 101 - Beginning French I (3 credits)
Introduces fundamentals of grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. Strong emphasis on interactive conversation as well as basic skills in listening, reading, and some writing. Themes include greetings, the family, clothes and personal appearance, weather, time and place, and work and play activities. Emphasis on geography, culture, and famous people of some French-speaking countries. 3 lecture hours

FRE 102 - Beginning French II (3 credits)
Prerequisite: FRE 101 with a minimum C grade or equivalent experience
Study continuation of the basic skills, including grammar and vocabulary, in the French language and French-speaking cultures. Themes include talking about the past, eating and drinking, expressions of preferences, shopping, illness, travel, and making reservations. 3 lecture hours

Prerequisite: FRE 102 with a minimum C grade or divisional permission
Cultural and short literary passages are read and discussed in French. Essential grammar and vocabulary, emphasized with intent to sharpen writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills. [Fall offering] 3 lecture hours

Prerequisite: FRE 201 or divisional permission
Continuation of reading and discussion of cultural and short literary passages in French. Essential grammar and vocabulary reviewed for further sharpening of writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills. [Spring offering] 3 lecture hours
