Academic Policies

Student Academic Standing Policy

Good Standing

Each student begins his or her enrollment at Mercer in Good Standing, which imposes no restrictions on his or her credit load beyond those contained in normal college policy. A student remains in Good Standing by passing the courses in which he or she enrolls each semester and by maintaining a satisfactory cumulative quality point average (QPA).

Academic Warning, Probation and Dismissal

If a student fails to pass enough courses in a semester and/or fails to maintain a satisfactory QPA, he or she will be placed under one of the following restrictions and may be required to participate in an appropriate developmental program:

Academic Warning enrollment limited to 13 credits, or equivalent
Academic Probation enrollment limited to 10 credits, or equivalent
Academic Dismissal enrollment prohibited for one full 15-week semester, with reinstatement only upon approval of an Individual Success Plan by the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs or designee

Detailed criteria for placing a student on Academic Warning, Probation or Dismissal are described below.

Any student placed on Academic Warning, Probation or Dismissal may appeal his or her status by contacting a counselor or a student advocate at either campus. A change in academic status requires the approval of an academic or student services dean or designee.

Student Academic Standing Criteria

A student's academic standing is determined at the end of each semester on the basis of semester credits passed and cumulative QPA, according to the following tables and chart.

Table I: Semester Credits Passed
The table below displays the minimum number of credits that must be passed in a semester to maintain satisfactory progress and minimum progress.

Semester Credits
Scheduled
Minimum Credits Passed to Achieve...
Satisfactory Progress Minimum Progress
1 to 4
5 to 8 3
9 to 11 6 3
12 and up 9 6

Table II: Cumulative Quality Point Average
The table below displays the minimum cumulative QPA required of a student who has attempted the indicated number of credits at the college.

Credits Attempted QPA OK QPA Low
0 - 9
10 - 19 1.60 or higher Below 1.60
20 - 29 1.70 or higher Below 1.70
30 - 39 1.80 or higher Below 1.80
40 - 49 1.90 or higher Below 1.90
50 or more 2.00 or higher Below 2.00

After using the above tables to determine whether the student's semester progress is satisfactory, minimum or below minimum and whether the student's cumulative QPA is OK or low, use the chart below to determine the student's academic standing.
