Basketball Teams "In the Pink" for
Breast Cancer Resource Center

February 10 marked Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Mercer
County Community College as the men's and women's basketball
teams played their last home games of the regular season.
Both teams were "in the pink" - adding pink shoelaces,
crocs, headbands and socks to their game day attire. A total
of $260 was donated by students, faculty, staff and fans to
be contributed to the Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC)
of the YWCA Princeton.
Speaking
at halftime was BCRC outreach assistant Brenda Esaw-Howard,
a two-time breast cancer survivor and MCCC student majoring
in Social Service who plans to graduate in May. She explained
that BCRC is dedicated to empowering and educating women about
breast health and helping women cope with and fight the disease.
"It's awesome for me to be able to give back and support
other women," Esaw-Howard told the fans. "I'm hear
to say you can survive breast cancer. Look at me -- I'm still
here."
The event
was hosted by Mercer's chapter of the American Association
for Women in Community Colleges, the Athletics Department,
and the Student Government Association, which provided funds
for raffle giveaways and pink "Hope, Faith, Love"
wristbands given to all contributors.
The evening also marked "Sophomore Night" for MCCC's
teams, which included a special ceremony prior to the start
of the games to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions
of student athletes who are completing their second season
playing with the Vikings. For the women, the game marked the
return to the line-up of sophomore forward Azaria Crews.
The men's and women's teams rose to the challenge of the special
night, coming away with victories against Morris County College.
The women, who had clinched a play-off berth prior to this
game, won 48-37, while the men's 57-55 win sealed them a play-off
spot.
The Region 19 tournament begins Feb. 21 for the men and Feb.
22 for the women. Go Vikings!
